Hazel Acosta

Founder of Alianza Flamenca.
At present teaching flamenco and running flamenco school “El Rincon” in Johannesburg.
Actively involved in promoting Alianza Flamenca and maintaining syllabus
Advising in artistic direction for various dance companies.
Assessing Alianza Flamenca students.
Choreographing and directing shows.
Organizing dance seminars with guest teachers.

Started career by studying ballet at University of Cape Town with teachers David Poole, Dulcie Howes and Cecily Robinson, also danced and toured Southern Africa with UCT Ballet Company.

Studied further in London in ballet and Spanish dance with various teachers including Lalagia and Elsa Brunelleschi. During this time performed in London West End and in productions on BBC television.

In Spain studied with La Quica, Mercedes y Albano, Paco Fernandez, Maria Magdalena, La Tati and Maria Rosa, also more recently with Manolo Marin. Danced with Luisillo y su Teatro de Danza Española as soloist and became ballet mistress of this company. Toured extensively through Europe, Middle East and Southern Africa.

Returned to South Africa to teach Spanish Dance in Cape Town, and also to dance with CAPAB Ballet Company and perform in and choreograph various Spanish Dance productions.

Contributed to setting and choreographing work for the International Spanish Dance Society and held position as senior examiner of this organization.

Relocated to Johannesburg and became Co Director of Mercedes Molina Dance Theatre with Enrique Segovia. Directed, danced and choreographed with this company.
Devised and choreographed several television productions for SABCTV, all one hour award winning productions.

In 1995 broke away from Spanish Dance Society to form new flamenco syllabus, Alianza Flamenca. Together with Carlos, Linda Vargas and Lina Dolores Vega, the Syllabus Co-ordination Committee, designed the 9 course training syllabus in flamenco which is now being taught in the UK, Greece, Australia, South Africa and Malta.
